Tips for Traveling in the Government Shutdown Era

With the current government shutdown and ongoing flight disruptions, it’s a strange time to travel. We pulled together some quick, practical advice — including how to prepare and what to do if your flight gets canceled, which airlines make it easy to rebook, and how to reach Frederick stress-free (even if that means switching to Amtrak!).

Getting to Frederick, MD

Frederick, MD is located about an hour from both Baltimore, MD, and Washington, DC.

Frederick is within an easy drive of three major airports. Each airport is roughly an hour from Frederick, MD, depending on traffic.
- Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI)
- Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA)
- Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD)
The easiest way to get around during your visit is by renting a car. Local transit bus, Uber, Lyft, and taxi services are also available.

There is no direct Amtrak service to Frederick, MD. However, Frederick County is served by the MARC commuter rail system, which connects Frederick with Amtrak at Washington, DC’s Union Station on weekdays only. The MARC train drops off at the Transit Center in downtown Frederick: 1040 Rocky Springs Rd. Frederick, MD 21702.
MARC train service is week-day only.
- Friday: Three trains depart Union Station for Downtown Frederick each Friday - 3:45 PM, 5:20 PM, and 6:40 PM (schedule).
- No Saturday & Sunday Service: There is currently no weekend train service between Frederick and Washington’s Union Station.
- Monday: The next trains returning to Union Station in DC are available again on Monday morning. Trains depart Frederick for Union Station at 5 AM, 6:05 AM, and 7:10 AM (schedule).

Frederick is about an hour’s drive from each of the three DC-area airports. Use your GPS on the day of for live traffic and toll updates. Plan ahead for weekday rush-hour traffic if you plan to arrive on Thursday or Friday, as all routes, especially I-270, can become congested.

Traveling by Car

- From DCA airport: Exit on the GW Parkway north → merge onto I-495 Inner Loop toward Maryland.
- No-toll route: stay on I-495, then take I-270 N straight to Frederick.
- Rush-hour shortcut: from I-495 take Exit 31A to MD-200 W / Intercounty Connector → merges into I-270 N → Frederick.
  MD-200 is an all-electronic toll road (E-ZPass or pay-by-plate) that usually skips Beltway congestion around Bethesda/Rockville.
- Follow I-195 W out of the airport → brief hop onto I-95 S.
- No-toll route: take MD-32 W ➔ I-70 W → Exit 56/US-15 into Frederick.
- Toll shortcut: stay on I-95 S to Exit 31 for MD-200 W (ICC) → joins I-270 N → Frederick.
  The ICC can save time when I-70 backs up; tolls are electronic.
- Leave the airport on VA-28 N.
- Fastest: VA-28 N ➔ VA-267 W / Dulles Greenway (electronic toll) ➔ VA-7 W ➔ VA-15 N / US-15 N across the Potomac to Frederick.
- No-toll alternative: stay on VA-28 N ➔ VA-7 W ➔ VA-15 N / US-15 N (adds ~10 min).

Toll Tips

MD-200 (ICC) and VA-267 (Dulles Greenway) are all-electronic: E-ZPass is easiest, but pay-by-plate works (slightly higher fee).
Friday evenings can add significant time—plan a buffer if you’re driving then.
